Physical Education

Physical Education at Lincoln consists of a lot of variety. Sixth graders will be exposed to a whole spectrum of activities including individual and team sports, individualized fitness workouts, and a personal health unit. 7th and 8th graders have more of a choice when it comes to PE class. One choice is an activity-based PE class, which typically consists of fitness-based workouts for warm-ups followed by game-based exercise. Another option is to have a fitness class. This class would be for students that only want to do individual workouts without the game component of class. A third option is Outdoor Living. This class focuses on learning more about the skills necessary to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle. Cultural Dance is another option for physical education.

10/14/21

PE classes with Ms. Long and Mr. Schrom have begun our awesome bicycling unit!  Lincoln has been doing a bike unit for the last 9 years and the students really enjoy it.  The program is run in cooperation with Safe Routes to School, which is an organization that encourages safe biking habits for school-age children.  This is not a program in which children learn how to ride a bike, but rather it is a program in which children learn how to ride their bikes safely on city streets and trails.  Most students have already passed a bike skills test and have attended a classroom session where we have reviewed important traffic laws.  In this program, we emphasize the importance of:

  • Wearing a helmet
  • Performing safety checks on bikes before riding
  • Riding with the flow of traffic (ie..riding on the right side of the road)
  • Being predictable
  • Using hand signals to communicate with other bikes and cars
  • Knowing who has the right of way at intersections
  • Scanning at all times for hazards

As is the case with any lesson, the best way to learn is by doing.  Therefore, we will be riding bikes during PE class on the streets and bike paths surrounding Lincoln Middle School.  The streets include, but are not limited to:

  • Vine, Shields, Taft Hill, Laporte, Wood, the neighborhood streets around Putnam Elementary School, and the Poudre River Trail.

All sixth grade classes will have multiple adults riding with classes.  All 7th grade classes will have at least two adults riding with each class.  All 8th grade classes will have at least one adult riding with each class.  Our off-campus rides will begin on Monday, 10/18 and go through 11/4.  Most classes will go on a total of 3 off-campus rides.  Since this program has become a standard part of PE classes in Poudre School District, you do not need to give permission for your student to participate in this program.  However, if you do not wish for your child to take part in this program, you may opt them out of the rides and they will be given alternative assignments in the form of worksheets and essays to complete instead.  We hope that you will allow your child to participate.  It's one of the more memorable lessons we do!  Please contact either Mr. Schrom or Ms. Long if you do not want your child to participate.
