6th Grade

Welcome to 6th Grade

Language and Literature

In 6th grade Language and Literature, students practice their skills of analyzing, organizing, producing text, and using language.  Our units encourage students to think about concepts like who they are as a reader and writer, their roles and responsibilities in a community, how language helps us express our identity and emotions, how setting and circumstances affect our experiences, the place for myths in the modern world, and how audience and purpose shape our communication.  We read books as a whole group (Seedfolks and Two Old Women) as well as have students foster their own independent reading.  Students write personal narratives, short stories, and poetry as well as informational and analytical writing and research.  Students read as writers and learn different ways to use language through our weekly dissection of sentences from literature.  6th graders gain foundational skills that will deepen and grow as they move through middle school.  In Language and Literature, students are encouraged to think like real writers and readers and to use that thinking to become better people.

Math

Welcome to 6th Grade Math! As many students enter their middle school years, math tends to fall behind as a favorite school subject. We often here the phrase "I'm not good at math!" The teachers at Lincoln are dedicated to building problem solving skills and confidence within our students to eliminate the feeling of "not being good at math." We believe that changing the mindset around math allows students to overcome their fear of numbers, and learn important life skills.

What will students learn in 6th Grade Math:

  • Unit 1: Numerical Expressions and Factors
  • Unit 2: Fractions and Decimals
  • Unit 3: Algebraic Expressions
  • Unit 4: Area of Polygons
  • Unit 5: Ratios and Rates
  • Unit 6: Integers and Coordinate Plane
  • Unit 7: Equations and Inequalities
  • Unit 8: Surface Area and Volume
  • Unit 9: Statistical Measures
  • Unit 10: Data Analysis

We will use various different approaches to teaching this units throughout the year. Some of the fun activities that we do during the year to show mastery of these skills include a Ratio and Rates Project, Cereal Box Construction Project, School Data Analysis Project, any many more.

There are several Math classes that 6th graders can be in:

  • Math 6
  • Math 7/8 (accelerated course combining 7th grade and 8th grade math)
  • Pro Math 6
  • Study Skills Math (small intervention class designed to target individual needs)

Science

Sixth graders spend the year exploring and investigating Earth Science. We start the year with a quick introduction to the scientific process and lab safety and procedures. Our topics of inquiry include the water cycle, weather and climate, geological processes and the geologic timeline, natural disasters, natural resources, and astronomy.

Individuals and Society

In 6th grade our focus is giving the student an overview of what Individuals and Society (Social Studies) is. We begin with map skills before moving into human geography, culture, civics, economy, personal finance, and the ancient tribes of central and South America and how they shaped the world we live in today.
