Welcome to AVID
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nationwide program dedicated to supporting students who strive to attend a 4-year university. While certain AVID strategies are used schoolwide at Lincoln, at the center of the AVID System is the AVID Elective. In this class, students work to strengthen study skills, note-taking, time management, writing skills, goal setting, and research skills, all while immersed in a college-going culture. The class also includes tutoring sessions led by local college students who support students in working through problems together. Additionally, the AVID class provides access to information about colleges and universities through field trips, guest speakers, college tutors, and college admission requirement information.
At Lincoln, the AVID Elective is an encore class that takes place during the school day on both green and yellow days. We currently have one AVID Elective class at each grade level. 6th grade students are introduced to and invited to apply for the class during the fall semester, with the 6th grade AVID Elective class beginning in January. AVID recruits students who are motivated to do well and who are serious about their academic future. Because AVID’s core mission is to work to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness, first generation college students are especially encouraged to apply. AVID students must be willing to commit to working hard, positive citizenship, good attendance, and maintaining grades at an average of 5 or higher. In AVID, we work hard while having fun and preparing for our future!
