8th Grade

Welcome to 8th Grade

Language and Literature

Welcome to Language and Literature. In 8th grade, you or your student will explore a wealth of new, fascinating and challenging concepts, books and material.  We examine how stereotypes affect self-perception, how conflict can change one’s identity and how writing is a tool for personal expression.  We write investigative journalism broadcasts, realistic fiction narratives, poetry, speeches and more!  We read books ranging from The Outsiders, to Night, to The Giver and some may even tackle Enders Game and All the Light We Cannot See!  We compare the plot structure of Moana, Batman and Mulan and we deconstruct the visual symbolism of popular music videos.  We design marketing campaigns and we debate the ethics of complex moral topics like censorship and freedom. Ultimately, we use reading and writing as tools to teach our kids perseverance and character.

Math

8th graders at Lincoln have three options for what classes they might take. The on grade level math class known as Math 8 explores the relationship of linear equations, graphing lines, volume, angles and so much more! The class is standard and data driven to help support students in being ready not only for the next classes of Algebra 1 or Geometry, but also how to analyze and use math to solve real world problems. This class is foundational to the following math classes for advanced students and for math classes in high school.

Students that are one year advanced will take Algebra 1 that takes one of the focuses of Math 8 around linear equations and graphing to a deeper level to look at how linear, quadratic and other exponential functions can be used to describe data in our lives. In addition to that there will be explorations in to inequalities, maximizing solutions and critical thinking about how they can be used together.

Students that are two years advanced will be taking geometry taking the focus from Math 8 about angles, volume and transformations to a deeper level. Students will learn to write and read proofs to not only learn rote skills about relationships between angles and shapes, but to prove why and how they exist.

Science

As we transition to the new Colorado state standards, 8th grade will continue with the following units of study: Weather and Climate, Astronomy, Motion and Forces, Energy and Waves, and Human Impacts on the Environment.  In each unit, we will learn the topics by looking at phenomenon within it and using scientific techniques to discover more about it.  We look forward to getting your scientific literacy ready for high school.
