This is my 5th year at Lincoln and my 13th year of teaching. Before moving to Colorado and becoming a teacher, I was a Marine officer on active duty for 11 years. Two summers ago, I retired from the Marine Corps after 16 years with the Marine Corps Reserve. I taught math at Highland High School in Ault, Colorado, before coming to Lincoln. I loved the students at Highland, but it has been really wonderful to work with the students here and I consider Lincoln my home. I especially like working with younger students at a critical time in their development as consumers and practitioners of mathematics. I am proud to coach the Lincoln girls' soccer team. I live in Fort Collins with my wife Lisa, a career social worker who now supports non-traditional students at the Adult Learner and Veteran Services department at Colorado State University. We have two daughters, Lila (11) and Rory (9), who I hope will become future Lancers!
I graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1991 with a BS in Electrical Engineering, a minor in Russian, and second lieutenants' bars. In 2008, I earned my Masters of Education at Colorado State University.
I love the craft, and I love trying to figure out what is going on in those brains! Teaching math is 1% explanation and 99% getting around misconceptions and mental blocks. I am learning to appreciate that adolescents--much like older humans--are not rational consumers of information. So, I try hard to incorporate puzzles, stories, and real-world problems into my teaching. This is a journey...
Red Mars, The Martian, The White Company, Alice's Adventures Through the Looking Glass, The Hobbit, Once An Eagle, The Stars My Destination, The Diamond Age
I love my work and my family (my wife would tell you it is in that order) so it is hard to make time for the hobbies I pursued before I had a family. If you are a cross-country skier or kayaker, I would love to talk to you about my first loves! These days, I find balance and wellness through gardening and taekwando.
I love that Lincoln makes space for all kinds of learners. We meet kids where they are and lift them up. I also love the spirit of team-work and collaboration at this school. Together, we can help all students reach higher!
Math is 100% like art.
If you never make any bad art…
You will never make any good art.
If you never do some bad math…
You will never do any good math.

I have made this longer than usual because I have not had time to make it shorter.

I teach Algebra 1 (accelerated pathway), Algebra 1 Plus (additional support for Algebra 1 students), and Advisory.
I am a teacher on a cart this year. I am so grateful to Gina Panighetti and Ben Berry for sharing their classrooms with me.
